Whither the weather

by admin on Sep.19, 2008, under life

Austin has been getting its fair share of awesome weather this past week – A nice change from the hot weather that closely resembles what hell on earth is like. For reals.

When weather like this comes around, it reminds me that weather like this exists. In a place like Texas, 95 + degree weather is usual. I woke up this morning, and it was 64 degrees at 8am. At 2pm, it was 81 degrees. Oh how I love this weather.

Hopefully it will hold up for ACL. I’m excited to see Beck, Manu Chao, and Man Man. Since I live so close to zilker park, I’ve decided to bite the bullet and just go to the freaking show. The weather is supposed to hold up, so hopefully I won’t get overloaded by all the festival nonsense. I’ll report back next week!

20 reasons running inside is no fun

by admin on Sep.15, 2008, under running

Holy hell. I did 20 miles yesterday. It was hell – for a couple of reasons (besides the obvious).

I thought that Hurricane Ike was going to dump on Austin this past weekend. Everyone did. So instead of waking up super early on Saturday to do my horrendous run, I decided I would sleep in and wait it out. Unfortunately, it was merely windy out Saturday by the time I got my arse outta bed. I decided I would wait until Sunday to do the run.

Sunday came, and it was hot. The “keep me in bed” bug had bitten me once again Sunday morning. It was nearly 10:30 by the time I dragged myself out of bed again. 10:30am in Texas is already hot, and I figured I would give myself a break on the ol’ legs and do the run on a treadmill.

I got my stuff ready and headed out to my gym. Luckily football games had already started so I thought I would be OK watching football on TV for that long period of time. Nope.

First off, doing anything for 3.5 hours is monotonous at best. Running inside on a treadmill for 3.5 hours is pretty much the most boring thing I have ever done. Sure, I got to watch the Colts overcome a first half beating against the Vikings. But seriously, running in place…. FOR 3.5 HOURS? Jesus.

Needless to say, I will not be doing any long runs inside anymore. I would imagine that running in the worst weather, at the worst time would still be better than running inside for more than 1 hr.

You live, you learn – you don’t run long runs inside on a treadmill. Now I know!

Gehrmans of the Internet, Unite!

by admin on Sep.11, 2008, under Uncategorized

So, I received an email last night – about someone named Kali Gehrman that added me as a friend on Facebook. Kali, huh? Turns out Kali took it upon herself to add every Gehrman on Facebook as a friend in an effort to figure out who we were / if we are related. I actually admire her for doing this.

Ya see, Gehrman isn’t a very common name. I’ve often googled the name “Gehrman” to see who was out there. Of course, my blog comes up (hopefully it will be higher in the list after this posting). But I’m intrigued by the amount of other Gehrmans that are out there. For instance, there is Dale Gehrman, an artist. There is the Gehrman Animal Hospital in Minnesota. Jody Gehrman is an author. Steve Gehrman apparently runs a software company in California (being a techy apparently is a Gehrman skill). And don’t forget to check out the Gehrman Family Website (My family’s website, although a little biased towards my brother Scott).

Anyways, whoever all these Gehrmans are – The email from Kali definitely has gotten me thinking about whether we are all related from some distant distant past. Would be very cool if that was the case! I look forward to figuring this all out! I’ll let you know what I find. :)

Oh, and thanks, Kali. I dont know you…. But I think you’ve initiated something very cool!

Iphone, yeay!

by admin on Sep.05, 2008, under tech

Finally, a year and 3 months after initial release, I got myself an Iphone (3G), thanks to my company.

I must say, this is one hell of a device. I am pretty impressed with the little gadget. The one thing, and I do mean one thing, I’m not impressed with is the initial battery life. I have a few fetch emails and one push email account setup on the phone. Other than that, I haven’t really been using the thing too much. In fact, right now, 5.5 hours after it was fully charged, I have about 1/4 or less battery left. Some people have told me that this levels out after a few weeks, which makes absolutely no logical sense – Except that maybe after a few weeks, I wont be quite as enthralled by the device; therefore using it a bit less.

Anyways, I really hope that this little nuance levels itself out a little bit. In these 29 years of life, I’ve come to find that even the best things have at the very least one thing wrong with them. Oh well….

UPDATE: I took my phone to the ‘geniuses’ at the apple store and apparently I had a bad apple (pun intended). They were quick to issue me a replacement and my battery life has increased ten fold. Hooray. Now this little bugger is great!

18 miles

by admin on Aug.30, 2008, under running

Well, I did it. 18 miles this morning. It was a pretty good run for the most part, except for the last four miles. I apparently left my little zipper open where I keep my gu. Two of the packets fell out, and needless to say, I ran out of energy short of the finish line. Note to self: dont leave pocket open where gu resides. The stuff tastes like flavored, well, goo. But it does wonders for your energy levels.

Anyways, thats it. I figured since I dont have any energy left to get up and do anything else, I might as well document the run, rite? Alrighty – Have a great labor day weekend!

Already….

by admin on Aug.27, 2008, under about me

So – I figured it was about time to go ahead and make use of my domain that I’ve had forever. So, here goes nothing. I dont know what this blog / site is going to contain or even be about. So fuggit. Lets see how much it gets updated / used / commented on. If you dont know me, hello. My name is Eric Gehrman and I live in Austin, TX – the greatest city in the US. I work for a great company called Ticketcity, where I work as a web developer. I’m an avid Dallas Cowboys fan. And on November 2, 2008 I will be running in the New York City Marathon. Which reminds me, I’m running for the American Legacy Charity, and I desperately need donations! I have two brothers, 5 nephews and 1 niece. And I have one dog named dupri.

So, I guess that’s it. Feel free to comment away and get this little bugger rolling. However, if you spam this blog – Hell will be brought to yourself and your loved ones. Enjoi!

-Eric

UPDATE:

I don’t work for TicketCity anymore, I ran the NYC Marathon in 5:13:13, and I have two dogs now. One named Milo and another named Dupri.
